JTX Japanese Thai Cross Kickboxing in Exeter, Your Questions Answered

If you're looking for a high-energy striking class in Exeter that builds real fitness alongside genuine skill, JTX Kickboxing at Exeter Martial Arts is worth a closer look. It's one of our most popular adult classes, and it consistently attracts people who've never trained in a combat sport before. Here's what it actually involves.

What Makes JTX Different From Standard Kickboxing?

JTX combines traditional kickboxing with Muay Thai techniques, including knees and elbows, creating a more complete striking system than standard kickboxing alone. Rather than sticking to punches and kicks in isolation, students build a fuller toolkit that draws on two striking traditions at once. That combination is what gives the class its name: Japanese Thai Cross Kickboxing.

Do I Need Experience to Start?

No. Our Exeter kickboxing classes are specifically designed to welcome complete beginners. Techniques are taught progressively, with full coaching support from day one, so you're never expected to already know your stance or your guard before walking in. New students train alongside more experienced members in the same sessions, picking things up at their own pace.

Do I Have to Spar?

Not at all, this is actually one of the most common questions new students ask. Sparring is optional, and many of our members train strictly for fitness and fun without ever stepping into the ring.

Here's how sparring works at EMA:

Am I Too Old or Unfit to Start?

Not at all. We have students across a wide range of ages and fitness levels training in our JTX classes. Sessions are designed to be scaled to your individual level, and fitness builds naturally the more you train, you don't need to arrive already fit to get real benefit from the class.

What Equipment Do I Need for My First Class?

Nothing, for your taster session. Just wear comfortable sports clothing and bring a water bottle. If you decide to join after trying it out, our instructors can advise you on gloves and hand wraps at that point, there's no need to buy anything upfront just to give it a go.

Why Train JTX in Exeter?

Exeter Martial Arts runs adult JTX Kickboxing classes at our central Exeter dojo, and we're easily accessible for anyone based in or around the city. As one of the South West's largest martial arts clubs, we're able to offer a genuinely full-time, experienced coaching team rather than relying on part-time instructors, which matters when you're learning technique properly rather than just following along.

A Full-Body Workout With Real Technique

Beyond the fitness side, JTX gives students a genuine sense of progression. The blend of kickboxing and Muay Thai elements means there's always another layer of technique to work on, from footwork and guard positioning through to combinations involving knees and elbows as students advance. It's a class that rewards consistency: the longer you train, the more the different elements start to click together into something more fluid.
