With many years of teaching experience we have found that the children learn best in specific classes tailored for each age group. We split our children’s classes into 5 age groups.

TRADITIONAL MARTIAL ARTS

Here at Exeter Martial Arts (EMA) we pride ourselves as being the premier Traditional Martial Arts dojo in the South West.
Our traditional Martial Arts stemmed from ancient Japan and have been passed down through many generations of martial artists. As well as their rich history they are still very relevant to us today, not only as fantastic self defence but also as a great way of building fitness and wellbeing.

Like punching and kicking? Want to improve your cardio? Try our Pad Blast session to improve your fitness while gradually honing your striking technique!

LION CUBS (3-4)

We pride ourselves on our children’s classes and the values and principles we pass on to the kids. For us, martial arts training is more than learning how to physically defend yourself.

JUNIOR JIU JITSU (7-11)

In these classes, we teach Japanese jiu jitsu, a battlefield martial art used in feudal Japan, which has become one of the most effective self-defence systems in the world.

CADETS JIU JITSU (11-15)

Our Cadets classes are tailored for 11-15 year olds.  At this age the classes focus strongly on self defence skills- which we feel are a crucial life skill as children become more independent.

We like to provide an holistic approach to health and wellbeing. Our classes range in intensity from
our gentle Tai Chi class, through to our challenging Strength and conditioning class

JIU JITSU

Jiu Jitsu is a traditional Japanese martial art which relies on technique rather than strength to defend against one or multiple opponents of any size, weight, and gender.

KOBUJUTSU

Okinawan Kobujutsu refers to the weapon system of the Okinawan arts, including the 6-foot staff Rokushakubo), dagger-shaped truncheon (Sai), among others.

KENJUTSU

Kenjutsu (literally translated means ‘sword art’) teaches techniques that entail the use of bladed weapons.

We train in the Kaze Arashi Ryu style of Kenjutsu.

BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, often likened to human chess, is as much a battle of wits as it is a battle of the bodies - techniques rely on leverage.

JTX KICK BOXING

Kick Boxing is a hybrid combat sport which draws on techniques from several preceding martial arts and combat sports, such as Karate, Muay Thai, Savate, Western Boxing,

JUNIOR BJJ (5-11)

Our sessions are fun and dynamic but also focus on respectful behaviour, discipline, and always reinforce the idea that continuous effort reaps rewards.

CADETS BJJ (11-15)

Cadets Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is for 11-15 year olds. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a competitive sport martial arts, similar to wrestling and judo.

JUDO

Judo is a great combat sport with a high popularity status across the globe. It has achieved Olympic

recognition and become one of the most popular martial arts in the world!

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

(MMA) is a full-contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of martial arts - traditional and combat sports

MUAY THAI

Muay Thai, also known as the science of eight limbs, is a martial art originating in Thailand which focuses on the use of fists and feet as well as elbows and knees.

Local club leads the way with new Safeguarding Code​

Exeter Martial Arts is  leading the charge in sports safeguarding, having successfully been recertified with the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts “mark”. Developed in consultation with Sport England, representatives from martial arts governing bodies, and leading safeguarding experts, the Code is funded by the National Lottery and was launched by the Sports Minister in 2018.  Achieving the Safeguarding Code, demonstrates our commitment to upholding the duty-of-care we have to the community and young people and recognise us as a martial arts provider that has reached and effectively maintained and high-level safeguarding standards. The Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts has been created so that parents and carers can clearly identify a martial arts provider that has demonstrated that they have reached and maintained good safeguarding standards and can make informed decisions when selecting a club for their child. Sue Harrison, Stakeholder Marketing at the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts said “We are delighted to see Exeter Martial Arts  have successfully attained the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts.” “When making choices about martial arts schools, parents and carers can easily determine, and be reassured that clubs in their local area are committed to safeguarding and upholding safe practices for their children if they appear on our register.”         ​    

Damien

Celebrating 25 years of Seishin. 

Our style of martial arts Seishin Mizu Ryu came into being in the mid 1990s and we are super proud to say this year is our 25th Anniversary of it first being introduced. Seishin was formed by Dr Richard Catterick during his martial arts journey. Inspired after reading  Bruce Lee's seminal book the Tao of Jeet Kune do which documents his creation of his own martial movement, and with the support of his club members decided to do the same with his base being the holistic art of jiu jItsu. After almost a decade of training/teaching and studying in Jiu Jitsu plus a variety of other martial arts, including ninjitsu, tai chi, wing chun kung fu, shorinji kempo, Brazilian jiu jitsu, kenjutsu and kobujutsu to name a few. He created the Seishin Mizu Ryu school which today contains several different martial disciplines within it. Seishin Mizu Ryu (SMR), translates from the Japanese as ‘water mind school’, it is a modern martial art style based on old principles which incorporates both empty hand and weapons techniques. The ‘water mind’ is the core principle that directs the styles' evolutionary and reactionary flows. The style has grown organically with his decades of training all encompassed within the Seishin Mizu Ryu brand SMR, incorporates Sensei Catterick's version of jiu jitsu (empty hand grappling), kickboxing (empty hand striking) and traditional weapons which he has developed through dedicating his last 34years to the martial arts. He is a multi-Style black belt and a full-time martial artist, national referee and level 4 sport England coach. On top of all this he has three degrees including a PhD in Oncology and a background in clinical research.  His academic learning mindset has helped his research and development of his martial art and this coupled with a high attention to detail he has had through his adult life promotes a great learning environment for his many students and instructors. Seishin Mizu Ryu celebrates its 25th anniversary in autumn 2023        ​    

Damien

Introducing Damien to the team. 

Just a quick update to let you know we have another instructor joining our team.  Damien has been a long time student at EMA and is a 2nd Dan black belt in jiu  jitsu and used to teach our Tai Chi class. He also has experience in BJJ and kickboxing too.  Damien is currently a University of Exeter lecturer in modern languages but is reducing his teaching time at university to come on board and teach at EMA and also pursue his other passion music. He will be taking over as lead instructor in some of our junior and cadet classes in the autumn as well as teaching a weekly adult jiu jitsu class      ​
