What is MMA?
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of both striking as well as grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground.
We train at Exeter Martial Arts which is THE venue for martial arts training in the city. It has a massive permanent 1400sqaure ft mat area, with a selection of bags, sand bags and other essential training equipment. (google link to dojo)
We have both ground and standing classes on Tuesday and Thurday evenings.
Class times
Tuesday 7.30-8.30pm Gracie Jiu Jitsu/BJJ
Tuesday 8.30-9.30pm MMA striking (Stand up- Boxing/Thai)
Thursday 7.30-8.30pm Gracie Jiu Jitsu/BJJ
Thursday 8.30-9.30 pm MMA striking (Stand up- Boxing/Thai)
Sunday 6-7pm Strength and conditioning class
All classes require a decent level of cardio fitness and if you haven’t already got this we recommend the traditional jiu jitsu classes at Exeter Martial Arts on Monday/Wednesday or Thursdays (see www.exeterjj.co.uk ).
There is always a good mix of age and experience in the classes.
What is involved in the MMA striking class?
Our sparring class is to enhance the striking skills of all who train through good body position, body awareness and timing. Striking with hands, feet, shins elbows and knees plus related takedowns are taught encompassing techniques from boxing, kick boxing and Muay Thai. Occasionaly we have a guest boxing coach to refine our hands and sparring.
We also now have pro fighter Sidney Silva on our team as visiting team coach, he is based in Wanderlei Silvas gym the Wand Fighters gym in Las Vegas and comes over to teach Rich and the other gym members a couple of times a year. See BJJ page for Sidney record.
Our gym is also entering an 8 person team in the UKMMA league 2011-2012 season
First class is FREE so you can come and try a lesson before joining the gym.
